Material Landscape

"Material Landscape" is a photography project that seeks out

natural landscapes within man-made objects. Glass, concrete, metal, resin.

These materials exist primarily as artificial objects with defined purposes and names.

Yet, in certain moments, their functions and meanings quietly recede,

allowing a landscape to emerge.

My work is not about likening man-made objects to nature.

Rather, it is about using photography to capture the moment

when a natural landscape reveals itself from within those artificial objects.

We tend to perceive the natural and the artificial as distinct entities. But are they truly separate?

"Material Landscape" begins with this very question.

The work is not meant to prove a point, but rather to serve as a catalyst for opening up the viewer's own perception.

That is precisely why I chose photography as my medium.

Photography is a medium deeply rooted in reality; the subjects it captures are tangible, material objects.

It is this very quality of reality that allows the work to emerge not as a fantasy or a CGI creation,

but as a landscape that was already latent within reality itself.

"Material Landscape" is not an attempt to create a new world.

Rather, it is an endeavor to encounter a landscape that was already there—one we had seen but failed to truly perceive.

The work does not aim to convey a single, definitive answer.

If it evokes the landscapes, memories, or ineffable sensations residing within each viewer,

then that very experience constitutes the completion of the work.

Material Landscapeは、人工物の中に自然風景を見出す写真プロジェクトである。

ガラス、コンクリート、金属、樹脂。

​

それらは本来、明確な用途や名称を持つ人工物として存在している。

しかし、ある瞬間、その機能や意味は静かに後退し、風景として立ち現れることがある。

​

作品の中で行っているのは、人工物を自然に見立てることではない。

むしろ、人工物の中から自然風景が現れる瞬間を写真によって記録することである。

私たちは自然と人工を別々のものとして理解している。

​

しかし、それらは本当に分かれているのだろうか。

Material Landscapeは、その問いから始まっている。

​

作品は主張を証明するためのものではなく、鑑賞者自身の認識を開くための契機である。

写真というメディアを選ぶ理由もそこにある。

写真は現実と強く結び付いたメディアであり、写されているものは実在する物質である。

その現実性があるからこそ、作品は幻想やCGではなく、

現実そのものの中に潜んでいた風景として立ち現れる。

Material Landscapeは、新しい世界を創造する試みではない。

それは、私たちが既に見ていながら認識していなかった風景に出会うための試みである。

作品を通して伝えたいことは、一つの答えではない。

鑑賞者それぞれの内側にある風景や記憶、あるいは言葉にならない感覚が呼び起こされるなら、その体験こそが作品の完成である。
