ESPERANTO

かつて、人々はひとつの言語を使っていた。

旧約聖書のバベルの塔の物語では、神の怒りに触れ、言語を分けられた人々は

互いを理解できなくなり、世界各地へと散っていった。

それから長い時を経て、異なる言葉を持つ人々が互いに理解し、

平和に共存することを願って、Esperantoという共通語がつくられた。

世界的な共通語として定着することはなかったが、その言葉は今もなお使われ続けている。

​

私はこれまで、さまざまな土地を訪れ、異なる文化や信仰、自然環境の中に存在する

人々の営みや風景を撮影してきた。

そこには、互いを隔てるほどに違いがあると同時に、

場所や文化を越えて共通するものが存在している。

​

それぞれの土地で過ごした時間は、やがて記憶となり、少しずつ遠ざかっていく。

しかし、忘れることと、存在しなかったことは同じではない。

​

記憶と忘却。
分離と融和。

​

世界を隔てるものと、それを越えてつながろうとするもの。

ESPERANTOは、その間に存在する関係を見つめる試みである。

Once, all people spoke a single language.

According to the Old Testament story of the Tower of Babel,

those who incurred God’s wrath had their language divided; no longer able to understand one another,

they scattered across the globe.

​

​ Long afterward, a common language called Esperanto was created, born from the hope that people of different tongues might understand each other and coexist in peace.

While it never became a universal language, it continues to be spoken to this day. ​

​

I have traveled to many places, photographing the lives of people and the landscapes shaped by diverse cultures, beliefs, and natural environments.

In these settings, I have found both profound differences that set people apart and common threads that transcend place and culture. ​

​

The time spent in each of these locations eventually fades into memory, drifting further away with the passage of time. Yet, to be forgotten is not the same as never having existed. ​

Memory and oblivion. Separation and reconciliation. ​

Between the forces that divide the world and the impulses that seek to bridge those divides—"ESPERANTO" is an attempt to examine the relationship that exists in that space.
